On the heels of signing the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) which sets aside $11 billion for the expansion of community health centers, President Obama officially proclaimed the week of August 8, 2010 – August 14 2010 “National Health Center Week.” Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said that thanks to the ACA, HHS will be making $250 million available to support the establishment of approximately 350 new health center sites in fiscal year 2011 and that those funds would allow current health centers to expand to new sites and support new community health centers in areas of need. America's community health centers now serve over 20 million people (including 925,000 farm workers and nearly 940,000 people who are homeless) in 7,000 communities in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Guam.
