On June 28, 2010, the federal government approved Pennsylvania's application to provide insurance to uninsured individuals with pre-existing medical conditions. Under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA), Pennsylvania will receive $160 million in federal funds to set up and run the high-risk pool, which may cover approximately 5,600 people.
The Pennsylvania plan's benefits will include, among other things, preventive care, physician services, mental health services, and prescription medication. Additionally, subsidized premiums for the program will cost eligible beneficiaries $283 a month. To qualify for the coverage, individuals must have been uninsured for the past six months and have a pre-existing condition. The program will not begin operations until after a contract is awarded for its administration.
