In 2006, 5 percent of the population accounted for nearly half of total national health care expenditures.

In 2006, the top 5 percent of health care spenders accounted for nearly 50% of total national health care expenditures, while the bottom 50% of spenders accounted for just over 3% of health care expenditures. This reflects a high concentration of health care spending among a relatively small population.[i]
