By 2020, it is estimated that 250,000 additional public health workers could be necessary.

In its December 2008 report, the Association of Schools of Public Health estimates that the nation could need 250,000 additional public health workers, including public health nurses, health care educators, and administrators. Additionally, over 100,000 public health workers will be eligible to retire in 2012.[i]
