The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) has released new state health data on its “State Snapshot” website. This site includes a wealth of information related to state health quality, as compared to national quality benchmarks.

The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has developed the “CMS Dashboard”, a web resource containing statistical data on Medicare reimbursement for inpatient hospital stays. This tool, which was created as part of the administration’s focus on greater transparency and open governance, can aid researchers and analysts observe trends in Medicare hospital reimbursements, including a breakdown of reimbursements by particular diagnoses, and could provide the foundation for future cost containment and quality improvement strategies. On March 26, 2010, Health Affairs published a study by Peter Cunningham, senior fellow at the Center for Studying Health System Change. Cunningham analyzed the financial burden of health care and its relationship to among other things, insured coverage rates and insurer market concentration. He concluded that cost containment efforts will have to be combined with expanding coverage to reduce the financial burdens of health care.
