In recent years, there has been a noticeable shift from the notion of “medicine as treatment” to “medicine as prevention.” Rather than treating illness and disease, the push for prevention hopes to manifest better population health and well-being plus lower health care spending. If we are going to be serious about improving population health and investing in the future of this nation, we need to be serious about investing in children’s health, including an understanding of and focus on the social determinants of health.
