William M. Daley
President
SBC Communications Inc.

William M. Daley, president-SBC Communications, is responsible for strategic planning, regulatory matters, governmental initiatives, external affairs and international affairs corporate-wide for SBC.

Daley joined SBC in December 2001, after serving as vice chairman of Evercore Capital Partners L.P., a private equity investment firm in New York. Prior to joining Evercore, he served as the chairman of Vice President Al Gore’s presidential campaign in 2000.

He also served as the Secretary of Commerce under President Clinton from January 1997 to June 2000. Under Daley’s leadership, the Commerce Department conducted in the year 2000 the most accurate and efficient census in American history.

As special counsel to President Clinton in 1993, Daley coordinated the successful campaign to pass the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

His previous non-government positions include partner at the law firm of Mayer, Brown & Platt, president and chief operating officer of Amalgamated Bank of Chicago, and a lawyer at the firm of Daley and George.

Daley serves on the Boards of Directors of Merck & Company, Boston Properties, The Joffrey Ballet of Chicago, Loyola University, and The Committee on US-China Foreign Relations. He received an LL.B. from John Marshall Law School and a B.A. from Loyola University.
