Deficit Reduction Panel Must Make Health System Costs and Quality a Top Priority
Statement by NCHC Action Fund President and CEO, Ralph G. Neas on passage of the Budget Control Act.
Congress has acted to avoid immediate fiscal catastrophe, but the hard and most important work is far from over. Dramatically rising health system costs remain the greatest threat to our nation’s future economic security.
As the new budget panel convenes, both political parties must make a serious effort to address the system-wide roots of cost growth part of plan A, because the alternative – across the board cuts to Medicare and other programs – would shift additional costs to consumers and businesses, and threaten access to care for both the most vulnerable and the middle class.
The National Coalition on Health Care stands ready to assist in the process of developing system-wide health costs and quality solutions based on the best evidence available in order to ensure a health system that is sustainable, affordable and fair.
